Posting on LinkedIn, to build visibility and your personal brand

The honest truth about LinkedIn in 2026 is that consistency and specificity beat frequency and polish. You don’t need to post every day or have a perfectly curated aesthetic — you just need to post things that are genuinely useful or interesting to the people you want to connect with.

What to post:

  • A project you just finished — what you built, what you learned, what you’d do differently
  • Something that surprised you during placement, a workshop, or study
  • A resource you found genuinely useful (with a sentence on why)
  • A reflection on your career direction or something you’re figuring out
  • A question you’re genuinely curious about — these often get the most engagement

What makes you/a brand stand out:

It’s almost always a specific point of view rather than a polished aesthetic. The students who build a following are the ones who write about their particular intersection or point of differentiation — e.g. a CS student who’s also interested in accessibility, or a data student who cares about sustainability.

That specificity is what makes you more mememorable, and helps people think of you when something relevant comes up.

Practical starting tips:

  • Engage on other people’s posts first to warm up your presence before posting yourself. Look at other comments that people have made, and find something that you have a genuine reaction to.
  • An easy way to start can be finding and sharing someone else’s article or work, adding in your opinion/thoughts, and then asking your audience a question. (Don’t do this too much though, as you want to bring more of your content in)
  • Write like you talk as opposed to the formal LinkedIn voice. This gives you another way to bring your personality through.
  • Keep your posts short — write 3–5 lines before the “see more”, then expand it after that if needed.
  • One genuine post a week is more effective than five performative ones, and ones with more substance will give you more cerdibility than posting for the sake of it.
